Your favorite soy schnitzel might need a new name soon. The majority in the EU Parliament voted for the ban on meat substitute names.

Should Your Veggie Burger Suddenly Get a New Name?

Remember our story a couple of days ago? We asked if terms like tofu sausage and veggie burger would soon disappear. Well, the members have voted – and the majority is in favor!
The news for proponents of the ban: The EU Parliament voted 355 to 247 to decide that terms like sausage, steak, or schnitzel should in the future be used exclusively for products made from actual meat. So, your soy schnitzel or veggie sausage would have to find a new name.

Why All the Fuss?

The applicant sees a “real risk of confusion”, arguing that plant-based alternatives do not offer the same nutritional values as the originals. She claimed it's about transparency for us consumers and the recognition of farmers.
However, consumer advocates consider the resolution nonsense. Who would accidentally buy a tofu sausage? Names like Vegan Seitan Schnitzel are perfectly clear and provide important guidance for conscious purchasing decisions. As the largest market, Germany would be particularly affected by a ban.

Is the End of Your Favorite Soy Schnitzel Sealed?

Absolutely not! Even though the Parliament has voted, you can relax! The resolution is only the first step. The decision now moves into negotiation with the 27 EU member states, who must also agree. So, whether the ban will actually come into effect is still completely open.
