Tomatina Festival: Why thousands throw tomatoes at each other
Buñol in red – a celebration full of tradition and emotion
A Sea of Tomatoes
What might look like the world’s messiest vegetable market is actually a long-standing tradition in Buñol. On Wednesday, this small town in eastern Spain turned into a massive tomato battleground once again. The reason? La Tomatina – perhaps the most famous food fight in the world.
Thousands of Participants and Tons of Tomato Pulp
Around 20,000 people from across the globe filled the streets to crush, slide, and throw overripe tomatoes at one another for an hour. In total, about 120 tons of tomatoes were distributed along the town’s main road – and just as quickly smashed and spread across the scene.
What started with white clothing ended in a pink-stained blur of people, pulp, and loud music, as trucks kept delivering fresh loads of the red fruit.
A Festival With History and Meaning
This year, La Tomatina celebrated its 80th anniversary – and did so under the theme of “Tomaterapia” (Tomato Therapy). The focus? Joy and togetherness, especially after the devastating floods that hit the region last year. The event became a symbol of recovery and renewal.
More Than Just a Tomato Fight
What started decades ago as a spontaneous brawl among friends has since grown into an international spectacle, complete with security measures, ticket sales, and media coverage. For many, Tomatina is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For Buñol, it’s an economic boost. And for some, it’s also a stage for expression – where fun and tradition meet.
