Endless pasta love? Noodle Imports at Record High
Italian Pasta Dominates, but a Vegan Trend is Shaking Things Up!
Editorial Assistant at Kitchen Stories
Who among us could live without pasta? The good news for all noodle fans: We in Germany love spaghetti, fusilli and the like more than ever! And it looks like this love is only getting more intense.
Bella Italia on Our Plates
If you've been to the supermarket lately, you've probably noticed that one country clearly dominates the noodle aisle: Italy. The figures from the Federal Statistical Office speak volumes: Last year, we imported almost 470,000 tonnes of noodles – a new record! A whopping 86 percent of that came directly from the motherland of pasta! That is a serious amount of pasta! Sure, Austria and Turkey also supply us with noodles, but they just can't compete with the Italian dominance.
The Vegan Wave is Rolling
But hey, German noodle production is also strongly involved! Maybe you've noticed it yourself, but a fascinating shift is currently happening domestically. Local production is growing, thanks to a clear superstar: the vegan noodle. The trend is obvious: We now produce more noodles without eggs than with them in Germany. That's a real game-changer! The traditional egg noodle is still tasty, but its production has massively declined compared to 10 years ago. Nevertheless: Our noodles are also popular abroad – especially in France, the UK, and Poland.
The noodle landscape is definitely in motion. What are you waiting for? Time for the next delicious pasta party, whether with Italian classics or domestic, vegan varieties!
